About WingDriver

It started with two crashes that nobody should have survived.

Both were caused by fatigue. Both happened in 2014. Both drivers are now the people who run this company.

WingDriver builds AI driver safety that runs on a smartphone. No hardware, no dashcam, no installation. We do it that way for one reason: hardware will never reach every driver, and the drivers it never reaches are the ones most likely to get hurt.

Our story

In 2014, two people who had never met each other's problem each survived a crash caused by driver fatigue. They spent the next decade on the same question, from opposite directions, and eventually built a company around it: AI, computer vision, and driver monitoring.

That first company sold hardware. Purpose-built cameras, wired into vehicles, installed one at a time. It worked, and they exited it. But the model has a ceiling nobody in the industry likes to talk about: you can only protect the vehicles somebody is willing to pay to fit out. Every subcontractor's van, every leased truck, every gig driver's own car, every motorcycle — unreachable. Not because the technology can't help them, but because the business model can't get to them.

So in 2021 they started again, with a harder constraint: the safety system has to run on a device the driver already owns.

What we actually do

WingDriver is an app for Android and iOS, plus an SDK for companies that would rather build it into their own app. It uses the phone's camera and sensors to watch the driver and the cabin while the vehicle is moving, and it intervenes in the moment.

It works offline, runs in the background alongside navigation, and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The only thing you add to a vehicle is a phone mount.

What we are not

We are not a dashcam, and we are not a replacement for one. A road-facing camera sees things a phone in a mount cannot. WingDriver covers the driver and the cabin, and it covers the vehicles your hardware was never installed in. On vehicles with no driver monitoring at all, it stands on its own.

Why the phone, and why now

Regulators have decided that driver monitoring is no longer optional. Under the EU's General Safety Regulation, Driver Drowsiness and Attention Warning has been required on all new vehicles since July 2024, and Advanced Driver Distraction Warning became mandatory on all newly sold vehicles in July 2026.

That fixes the future. It does nothing for the present. There are more than 1.5 billion vehicles already on the road worldwide, and the average car in the United States is now close to 13 years old. Even once a safety feature is standard on every new vehicle sold, it takes decades for the fleet to turn over enough for that feature to be on most vehicles actually driving.

We are not willing to wait decades. Almost every one of those drivers already carries a device with a camera, an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a GPS. The phone is the only piece of safety hardware that is already deployed at global scale.

There is a second argument, and it is the one drivers make themselves: the phone is usually cast as the problem. Putting it to work watching the driver turns the thing that pulls attention away into the thing that pulls attention back.

What we've learned so far

We have collected several million images of distracted and drowsy driving, which is what makes the models better every month. Beyond the model, the pattern that shows up in every deployment is the same: operators come to us with no visibility at all, and are surprised by how much dangerous behaviour is happening in vehicles they thought were fine. Once it is measured and fed back to the driver in real time, it drops.

From WingDriver pilots
  • Up to 72% fewer dangerous driving behaviours over a three-month pilot.
  • 77% of drivers report feeling safer on the road.
  • 33% of users say WingDriver helped them avoid an accident.
  • Around 2 dangerous events per mile surfaced in the first weeks — invisible before.

Figures are drawn from WingDriver pilots and past deployments. Results vary by fleet, region, vehicle type and how the product is used, and are not a guarantee of future performance.

What we won't do

Every competitor in this category sells surveillance to the company. We took a different position, and we have built the product so that the position is enforced rather than promised.

Who we work with

Ridehailing and mobility platforms that want safety on every driver's phone. Logistics and trucking fleets that need to cover the vehicles their hardware never reached. Resellers and distributors adding a software safety line to a hardware catalogue. And insurers building next-generation usage-based products that price risk on how someone actually drives, rather than what they drive.
